Local Flavor: A fragrant hill of beans rises in Tequesta

From the Palm Beach Post

By Liz Balmaseda   |  Dining  |  May 30, 2012

Amy and Scott Angelo have sailed the seas, yachting on gusts of love and good coffee. They have sampled the coffee in lands near and far, always favoring the delicate roasts, those that allow the scents of a coffee bean’s origins to shine forth.

Now they roast the world’s beans in a small, landlocked storefront along Old Dixie Highway in Tequesta. There, at their Oceana Coffee Co., in a big, green, magical roaster, they give rise to aromas that are rare in these parts.

Roasting has become their business, one that is growing on word of mouth and a lot of legwork. They sell their fresh-roasted beans, ranging in intensity and flavor notes, to South Florida eateries, a local food co-op and even a local brewery that makes seasonal java-spiked beer. They also brew it at their storefront shop, a homey space with simple tables and seating and a meeting room.

Scott Angelo pulls a sample scoop from the 15 pounds of Kenyan coffee beans he’s roasting at Oceana Coffee in Tequesta and inhales deeply.

“It’s just between wet grass and hay right now,” he says. “Next is baked bread.”

Not smells most people associate with coffee, these are three of the stages that coffee beans pass through during the roasting process as they go from their raw green state to the smooth, consistent shade of brown that marks properly roasted coffee.

To the untrained nose, though, the smell is reminiscent of well-popped popcorn. Mr. Angelo suggests waiting a bit and then taking a deeper sniff.

Mr. Angelo and his wife Amy, who opened Oceana Coffee together late last year, discovered they both had a passion for those complexities a few years ago after purchasing fresh-roasted coffee from a supplier on the west coast.

"Oceana Coffee debuted last week in Tequesta, one of the only local roasters in the area. It's the brick-and-mortar result of three years of work for Amy and Scott Angelo, who spent time tasting beans, learning sourcing, experimenting with roasters, and building the cash to start the shop."
